Each winter my city renews her romance: with the spirit of Drama, Music and Dance!
She welcomes with kolams on every street- new tunes and the rhythmic percussion beat.
Everyone hums , the very air thrums,– what a variety of instruments and drums!
Dhoti-clad men brave the cool morning air, women in silks with jasmine in their hair,
With clashing cymbals, and clapping hands, perform bhajans-( fervent religious chants).
Students crowd the lectures, awaiting their chance
Musicians are conferred awards- their fame is enhanced!
The concerts start early, the crowds are packed tight-
And the performers go on till quite late at night!
Colourful pavilions outside each hall provide piping hot snacks to one and all.
May the tradition of Marghazi be ever a part
Of celebration in every music-lover’s heart!
