I thought that as my daughter grows,
I’ll fence her in with “don’ts” and “noes”,
Keep her safe, in long dresses and tight laces,
Teach her to fear strangers and dark, lonely places.
Discourage an intellect that enquires, a voice that sings,
But I found that I couldn’t bear to cut her wings!
And so she works, plays, hikes and roams:
Whilst I shoulder the worries- sitting at home.
