Once a wobbly atom stretched out its arm to another,
And molecules started to clump together;
Proteins became protoplasmic cells.
But cells started to specialize, and organs formed,
They became self-aware, fearful of harm.
The survival instinct then kicked in,
Enclosing the organism in shell or skin.
At this very stage did the ego begin
Its chant of “You are out, and I am in!” ?
Thus our barricaded villages, tribes in kraals,
Fortified towns, cities within walls;
Insular nations, insecure, at war:
How close to the primitive organism, how far
From our potential to evolve apace:
Shed the animal-ego-skins of our fearful race,
Become inclusive and progress as true Men,
Attempt to grow beyond the merely human!
