A sculptor spoke to me across an abyss deep and vast
And I was amazed that I understood him, though centuries had passed.
He’d cast in bronze a mighty snake with hood and poisoned fangs–
And Krishna jumping high above- part of that deadly dance:
The entire weight of that Chola bronze (exquisite workmanship)
Was balanced on the snake’s tail –on Krishna’s fingertip!
The sculptor’s joy in Krishna’s dance made of his work an offering:
And raised his stature high above -his master- the Chola king!
